At a company in a remote area of England, the head of pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline is trying to make a profit on his nicotine patch, which contains Zyban, instead of the nicotine from which it was launched in the UK in 2002. The patch, which was manufactured by Glaxo, is not expected to be available in the US until late 2024. A UK company is seeking a generic version of the patch to compete with a cheaper version, which is called Zofran, which is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb. The two products are manufactured in two different strengths - the higher strength (up to 150mg) and the lower strength (up to 250mg). The company is trying to develop the lower strength version of the patch.
Glaxo said it was planning to produce a generic version of the patch, which will be available in the US starting in the second half of this year. The company is planning to launch the lower strength version of the patch in the US starting next year. The patch is not expected to be available in the US until the second half of this year.
The patch is a nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation. It contains nicotine but is administered through a tablet and patch. The company said it is in the process of developing a generic version of the patch.
Glaxo said: "The patch is made from two different strengths, 150 mg and 250 mg, as well as being packaged in a blister pack. Zyban contains the active ingredient Champix which is used to treat major depressive disorder. Zyban is also available as a non-prescription medicine. In addition, Glaxo has an Australian subsidiary, Wellbutrin SR, that offers the same treatment but has an additional benefit - it helps smokers quit by reducing the body's appetite. We will continue to develop and manufacture Zyban products to meet the growing demand."
Glaxo, which has been buying the patches from other companies, said it is currently looking to launch the lower strength version of the patch in the US by the end of 2024.
"The lower strength version of the patch will be available in the US by the end of 2025," said GSK spokesman Rob Harrison. The company said it is in the process of working on developing a generic version of the patch.
The company said the two products were developed to compete with a cheaper alternative and would be produced by a different manufacturer.
A spokeswoman for Bristol-Myers Squibb said: "Bristol-Myers Squibb and Wellbutrin are manufacturing and supplying the patch to Glaxo in two different strengths, 150mg and 250mg.
"Zofran, the generic version of Wellbutrin, is currently being developed. It is a non-prescription medicine and has been in clinical trials for smoking cessation and has been shown to help smokers quit."
Bristol-Myers Squibb said: "Bristol-Myers Squibb has partnered with a generic version of Wellbutrin SR for a new product line, Zyban SR, for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Zyban is available as a non-prescription medicine and is currently in clinical trials for smoking cessation and helping smokers quit.
"Zofran is currently being developed in Australia and is in Australia."
Bristol-Myers Squibb said: "The Zyban SR is developed in the same way as Wellbutrin SR but it has the same active ingredient, Champix, and contains the same active ingredient, norethindrone. This was designed to treat smoking cessation and help smokers with depression find relief from their symptoms from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
"Zofran is currently in Phase 3 trials in Australia for smoking cessation and has been shown to help smokers with depression find relief from their symptoms from nicotine withdrawal."
Glaxo said it was still working on the Zyban patch in the US and wanted to see how it would compete with other patches.
In a statement, Glaxo said it was seeking to develop a generic version of the patch, which will be available in the US starting next year.
It is also seeking a version of the patch that is not available in the US and will be sold at a cheaper price than the patch.
It is also pursuing a patent for the Zyban patch in the UK.
Glaxo said it was working on a patent for Zyban in the US and is seeking the licence of a generic version of the patch from Bristol-Myers Squibb.
